My First Love

A friend called this morning and asked if I wanted to go riding today. Horseback riding. You know - horses - my most favorite thing? And it's the perfect day - cool, feels like fall weather with just a hint of sun. Excellent riding weather. So what did I tell her?

"I've set aside today to work on my manuscript."

What? I'm saying to myself. Are you nuts? It's the perfect day for riding.

But I haven't worked on my story for three days, and it's calling me, calling me, with an urgency more important than riding. I need to get this finished, need to get it out there, and I guess I just realized that writing is my most important priority right now.

Things have changed. Writing is my first love. Wow. I guess even I'm a bit shocked. Over and out - back to my story.

Good for you being true to your passions. And what a kind and thoughtful friend to offer you the option of enjoying a pre-autumn ride.

Hopefully you didn't pass up a truly blissful experience to enjoy another one of your loves while soaking in the beauty of the seasonal changes. Who knows. Your horse ride might have even become a little mustard seed when writing your next book.

Sometimes a little fresh air, joy and freedom can release free flowing thoughts and ideas within our brains.

Of course, sometimes there is a similar freedom in just being still and quiet.

Wishing you much success with your writing today.

I can relate to this so, so much. Lately all I've been wanting to do is read or write. Writing has gone from something I really really like to do to my straight up passion.

It's so fun to go out and do stuff, but once in awhile it's totally okay to put writing first.

It's funny how things change when we don't even realize it. There will be plenty of perfect riding days ahead for you!

Thanks for dropping by to comment! Lisa - I did manage a nice walk today, and yes, fresh air does help get the mental juices flowing.

Amy - yep, when you're in the zone, you're in the zone. And our non-writer friends just think we're nuts ;-)

Laura - thanks. Hope the weather stays good long enough for me to enjoy some outside things, when I finally come up for air. LOL

Oh, this post hits home with me in a big way! Horses and riding have always been a love of mine. Since I no longer share my life with a horse, I don't have the temptation to give up writing to ride, but I definitely understand where you are with this. Hope you got lots of writing done!
